Spellbound? Hardly ...

Entry from 'Thoughts from the Kerbside' - The Big Wheelie Bin Blog
A thoughtful and sometimes humourous look at the world of waste, brought to you by industry observers. We'd like to create a vibrant blogger community going forward, so if you'd like to become a regular blogger for LAWR, please get in touch - we'd love to hear from you!
Councils and wheelie bins took another thumping today, this time from hypnotist and self-improvement guru Paul McKenna who was talking on LBC radio this morning.

Listening to him was quite irritating and seeing as he spends most of his time in america these days trying to conquer the world with his 'get rich/slim/popular quick' books, does he really have any clue what really goes on with our wheelie bin collections?

I venture not. He was just jumping on the sensationalist headlines that the likes of the Daily Mail trot out on a regular basis - irate that we could get fined for putting the wrong bin out on the wrong day, or for chucking a fishbone into a green waste container.

He must be a bright lad. He's sold lots of books. I'd expect more from someone who can put a chain-smoker under his spell and then pull them out of it nicotine-cleansed. At least for a while.

The trouble is, wheelie bins are fast becoming an easy target for anyone to take a pop at - like feral hoodies, or teenage obesity. Intelligent debate has been thrown out of the window in favour of whipping up anger, fear, horror or panic.

I would have hoped the likes of Paul McKenna - who is a highly influential public figure - could have wielded some power on LBC radio today and talked about the real problems the nation faces in dealing with its waste, and that rules are to be followed for a reason. It's our waste, our problem. It's about time we all faced up to it.
