Lancashire reuse pilot for bulky waste

Used furniture gets a makeover in Lancashire
An Accrington charity is to develop Lancashire's first centre specialising in recycling old furniture.

HUFS (Hyndburn Used Furniture Store) has been collecting unwanted furniture for a while and passing it to people in need, but if an item wasn't fit for reuse it was sent to landfill. The group has been awarded a grant to pilot a 'deconstruction' centre, as part of its new bulky waste collection contract with Rossendale Borough Council.

The centre will take old furniture that can't be reused and separate the materials ready for recycling. For example, the wood, textiles and foam will be removed from a chair and sent for reprocessing into new products.

HUFS secured funding for the project from Community Solutions, run by Lancashire Community Recycling Network, which supports community-based sustainable waste management initiatives in the county. The Lancashire CRN is funded by Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council.

The charity, which was formed in 2004, collects secondhand furniture and household appliances for reuse by local people in need. Any items failing safety tests are recycled as far as possible.
HUFS also works with Hyndburn Council, collecting waste electrical and electronic items, and it offers training opportunities to unemployed people and volunteers.

Michael Miller, HUFS director, said: "We hope this additional funding will aid in achieving our objectives to develop recycling solutions for local authority bulky waste streams. These are very exciting times within HUFS and the reuse sector and we see partnership working as a key factor in delivering these services".
