Contract for Severn Trent Water

Trimpley Reservoir and Water Treatment Works, Kidderminster

Mission: To process 4,500 cubic metres of sludge from a site within an established beauty spot with no disruption to wildlife

The works are located in the picturesque Severn Valley - a recognised beauty spot and home to a variety of wildlife. As a by-product of potable water production, sludge cake has been stored in a nearby lagoon for a number of years and the 7.5 ha lagoon needed to be cleaned to guarantee its continued use.

Oran Environmental Solutions, designed a process that would enable the sludge to be removed and processed on site, avoiding the need to shut down the works and causing little, if any, disturbance to the locality.

Due to the volumes of sludge to be processed, Oran Environmental Solutionshad to design and fabricate a mobile unit capable of processing in excess of 120 cubic metres per hr. They built a centrifuge onto a purpose-built chassis and fitted a stabilising unit to each corner to allow the dewatering process to proceed at the volumes requested, with no compromise to operational safety.

OranEnvironmental Solutionsoperated a self-propelled raft, fitted with hydraulic submersible suction and delivery pumps, which moved continually across the lagoon. This helped to provide a homogenous sludge feed to the centrifuge with minimum disruption to the ecology of the lagoon. The sludge was pumped from the raft to a secondary blending tank then fed into the centrifuge, which handled an average of 28.8 dry tonnes per day.

The treated water was pumped back down to the lagoon and the extracted dry material loaded onto trailers and transported to a local landfill for use as a soil-conditioning agent.

Ciaran Kelly, then Works Manager with Severn Trent Water Ltd, said:

“The emptying of the lagoon was vital to ensure its continued operation in an area with no alternative treatment options. This was a difficult job that required extensive planning and sensitive operation, and it was completed with the highest professionalism.”
